Cheese Rolling on Cooper's Hill
I planned to visit 30 landmarks over two days, 9th and 10th August, in preparing the Gloucestershire road book with an over night stop at Tewkesbury Travelodge. Of the 30 landmarks, 6 didn't make the cut for the following reasons:
- One because of the soul sapping ride through Gloucester to get to it.
- One because there wasn't a sensible place to stop and photograph it.
- Three because I just couldn't get to them. Highgrove was impossible to approach.
- One because there was nothing of interest there. I managed to find a nearby substitute (gliding club) for this one.
That left me with my 25 landmarks. One thing I have to admit is that when I got home I realised that Broadway tower is 50 metres into Worcestershire! My only justification for its inclusion in a Gloucestershire road book is that the road I took the photos of it from is in Gloucestershire.
Gloucestershire is an interesting shaped county spanning both sides of the Severn to the west and covering much of the Cotswolds to the east. I particularly enjoyed riding through the Forest of Dean and the beautiful Cotswolds. No surprise then that the majority of my landmarks are found in these two areas. My route took me on the less travelled Cotswold roads which I found to be very good riding. (Maybe a tad bumpy as my Givi Wingrack had a fatigue crack in it when I got home.) Gloucestershire and Cotswold airports were also great spots for me. Both have excellent eateries with great views of the airport. Cooper's Hill where they hold the cheese rolling contest is so steep. They must be nutters to do that. All in all, a good ride. Especially as it was the first long ride on my Blackbird after changing the stator coils, rectifier and battery. It went well.
